Kate del Castillo, Chapo Guzman, and Sean Penn: A Great Film Story?
Robert Draper in The New Yorker has a fascinating article on the “go-between” who helped arrange the controversial meeting between American actor Sean Penn and drug kingpin Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman.
A naturalized U.S. citizen, actress Kate del Castillo , who I very much enjoyed as Ofelia in the PBS show American Family, was born in Mexico. At the age of 18, del Castillo became known for her lead role in the telenovela Muchachitas, in 1991. She continued her career in film and television in Latin America. In 2011, del Castillo earned recognition in the United States for playing the lead role in La Reina del Sur. She later worked in several American TV series and supporting roles in Hollywood feature films, but has experienced some difficulties breaking into the American film mainstream.
Del Castillo had hoped to make a film on Chapo Guzman’s life. She helped arrange an interview between Sean Penn and Guzmán in October 2015. Photographs show del Castillo at the meetings. The New Yorker article tells the fascinating story of del Castillo’s role in the meeting.
