New Roots for Refugees

Newroots

New Roots for Refugees is a partnership between Catholic Charities of Kansas City and Cultivate Kansas City, a nonprofit that promotes locally grown food. The goal of New Roots is to help “refugee women put down new roots by helping them to start their own small farm businesses growing and selling vegetables.”

As NPR reports, women from Bhutan, Myanmar, Somalia, Burundi, and Sudan have taken part in the New Roots education. “The program aims to teach the basics and business of farming to refugees over the course of four years. At the end, many of the graduates are ready to start farms of their own.”
