Decade of Mass Incarceration of Migrants Prosecuted for Crossing the Border

Indefensible

Today, Grassroots Leadership published Indefensible: A Decade of Mass Incarceration of Migrants Prosecuted for Crossing the Border with its partners at Justice Strategies.

You can read the book free online.

In it, we examine ten years of “Operation Streamline,” known for mass hearings in which up to 80 migrants are arraigned, found guilty, convicted and sentenced simultaneously for “improper entry,” a misdemeanor. The policy has long been decried by immigrant rights advocates like you. But the mass hearings, as shocking as they are, are only the tip of the iceberg. In Indefensible, we turn to the widespread expansion of felony “re-entry” prosecutions and the mass incarceration of migrants that came with the Streamline program. This piece in Univision looks at the report and it’s findings. Indefensible is an in-depth investigation into the costs and failures of a decade-old bad idea that has wasted millions of dollars and inflicted an incalculable amount of human suffering.

Authors Judith A. Greene, Bethany Carson and Andrea Black interviewed more than three dozen people in their research into the failed policy of migrant prosecutions.
