Republican Platform Goes Right, Border Wall Prominent
The New York Times reports that the Republican Party platform is moving to the right, including on immigration. The platform still is in the works and will be announced at the Republican National Convention next week.
According to the Times, Republicans are moving toward “adopting a staunchly conservative platform that takes a strict, traditionalist view of the family and child rearing, bars military women from combat, describes coal as a `clean’ energy source and declares pornography a `public health crisis.’” The platform calls for “destroy[ing] ISIS,” belittling President Obama as weak, and accusing his administration of inviting attacks from adversaries.
The initial draft called for building a “physical barrier” along the United States border with Mexico. It was amended to call specifically for a wall, which Donald Trump has enthusiastically advocated from the beginning of his presidential run. The Washington Post reports that the platform now states that the “border wall” would cover “the entirety of the Southern Border and must be sufficient to stop both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.”
