Maricopa County voters oust Sheriff Joe Arpaio
Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff Joe Arpaio was defeated last night in his bid to be re-elected as Sheriff of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Paul Penzone, a retired Phoenix police sergeant, is the new sheriff in town. It was a turnaround for Penzone, who in 2012 was nosed out by Arpaio, an immigration hardliner and ally of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. For election details from Arizona, click here.
In office for 24 years, Sheriff Arpaio has long been controversial for his criminal and immigration enforcement measures. He will soon be on trial on criminal contempt charges in connection with a civil rights lawsuit.
