New Detention Center Coming to Conroe, Texas

Conroe, Texas, is a 45 minute drive north of Houston. It’s about to be home to the first private immigration detention center to be built under the Trump presidency.

The center will be built by The Geo Group for $110 million dollars. It will house 1,000 detainees at a time.

That capacity has surprised some considering that “GEO, ICE’s second-largest private prison contractor, has approximately 3,000 empty beds nationwide, according to a February investor call.” And The Geo Group currently operates another 1,517-bed detention center in Conroe.
