Former Maricopa County Inmate on Arpaio’s Pardon
This op-ed from WaPo offers a unique perspective on President Trump’s pardoning of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. It’s written by a former inmate of the Arpaio-run Maricopa County Jail. The author did his time in one of the jail’s tent cities, infamous for terrible conditions. He writes, near the end:
I am not ashamed of what I did: I committed a crime and I paid my dues. How ironic it is, that the immigrant who committed a minor criminal act has to live with a conviction on his record for the rest of his life, while a criminal like Arpaio gets to walk away unscathed for his crimes, which are greater in scale and severity.
