When Asylum Meets National Security
The Guardian has the heartbreaking story of Shakila Zareen, photographed here by Rada Akbar.
Shakila sought asylum in the U.S. after facing significant abuse at the hands of her husband – including being shot in the face. The problem with her application? Shakila’s husband and abuser has ties to the Taliban. Those ties may have led to the USCIS’ decision to deny her application as “a matter of discretion for security-related reasons”.
