Judge Richard Posner, Steadfast Critic of BIA, Immigration Courts, Retires

Posner-r[1]

Big legal news ended the week.  One of the nation’s most influential judges and legal writers, Judge Richard Posner, is retiring today from U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Posner has written more than 3,300 opinions in nearly 36 years on the bench, along with scores of books. He is known for a sharp wit, clear writing and opinions that could be equally biting and humorous, with occasional references to his cats.

In his opinions, Judge Posner has consistently been critical of the Board of Immigration Appeals and the immigration courts. He has frequently been featured on this blog (here, here, here, here, for example).  One of my favorite articles on his immigration jurisprudence is by Adam Cox74 U Chi L Rev 1671 (2007) (examining Judge Posner’s jurisprudence reviewing agency adjudications in immigration cases).
