Top 10

As 2017 comes to an end, we at the Migration Information Source are taking a look back at the developments around the world that defined migration this year, with the countdown of the Top 10 Migration Issues of 2017. In this annual series of articles, experts at the Migration Policy Institute highlight the year’s key trends in migration issues and policies around the world—working backward to reveal one key issue each day.

From a spike in migration across South America, to the successes and setbacks of nationalist politicians in Europe and the United States, to returns of Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan, the first half of our countdown has covered a range of developments around the world and responses to migration in destination countries. Over the next week, the Top 10 will continue to explore these questions and many more.

Without further ado, here is the first half of the countdown:

  1. In Latin America, Spike in Migrant Arrivals Prompts Flurry of Reponses
  2. Nativism Goes Mainstream, Moving the Needle on Migration Policy
  3. Despite Progress on Brexit Negotiations, Fate of Millions of EU and UK Nationals Still Hangs in the Balance
  4. Increased Focus on Forced Return of Migrants and Asylum Seekers Puts Many in Peril
