California Governor Jerry Brown Pardons Immigrants with Old Criminal Convictions, Draws Ire of President Trump

On Good Friday, California Governor Jerry Brown pardoned five ex-convicts facing possible removal from the United States, drawing criticism from President Trump (who himself was sharply criticized last year for pardoning Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio for criminal contempt in repeatedly violating court orders in a civil rights lawsuit).

The five immigrants were among 56 pardons and 14 commutations Mr. Brown granted  to those who have been out of custody for at least 10 years and have exhibited “exemplary behavior” after their convictions, the governor’s press office said.  The press statement further emphasized that “Those granted pardons all completed their sentences years ago and the majority were convicted of drug-related or other nonviolent crimes. Pardons are not granted unless they are earned.”
