Forbes: Restrictive Measures in Trump Immigration Bill
I urge you to read this article from Forbes about the restrictive measures hidden in the proposed End the Shutdown and Secure the Border Act.
The article does a masterful job of highlighting problems with the bill’s treatment of DACA, TPS, and Asylum.
On the DACA front, the article notes that “The bill requires all DACA recipients to reapply under a higher evidentiary burden, pay double the application cost, and, in an ‘unprecedented’ requirement in U.S. immigration law, repay any lawfully-obtained tax credits[.]” And there are numerous other restrictions, such as limiting relief to those with DACA already and those who can prove they can maintain income 125% above the poverty line.
On the TPS front, four of the six countries affected by the end of TPS would get limited relief. They, too, would need to show income %125 above the poverty line. The bill would also change the future of TPS, preventing its future applicability to those in an undocumented status. And TPS recipients might not get work authorization.
Finally, as for asylum, the bill would reestablish the Central American Minors program and potentially restrict the ability of children from Central America from qualifying for asylum if they seek entry to the US outside of this program.
