Anti-immigration billboards across Canada taken down after backlash
Canada is often referred to as immigrant-friendly. But it appears that there is at least some resistance to “mass immigration” in the United States’ northern neighbor. Moira Warburton for Reuters reports that anti-immigrant ads on billboards across Canada are being taken down after a public outcry, according to the company that owns the billboards.
The ads were launched in support of Maxime Bernier, leader of the small right-wing anti-immigration People’s Party of Canada, and called for a halt on mass immigration to Canada. They started appearing in several Canadian cities last week.
The People’s Party of Canada has an immigration platform that may sound familiar. Here are two pieces on immigration on its website:
Refugees: Ending Open Borders Policies and Prioritizing Persecuted Groups
Immigration: Reducing Overall Levels and Prioritizing Skilled Immigrants
These policies sound similar to ones embraced by the Trump administration.
