Sign of the (Trump) Times? Incoming Harvard Freshman Deported After Visa Revoked
For many people, the first year of college can be challenging personally and academically. The challenges can be especially daunting for foreign students. As this Voice of America video below discusses, the United States has become a less popular destination for international students.
The Harvard Crimson reports that, while most Harvard freshmen settle into their dorms today, one new student faces ongoing negotiations with immigration officers to allow him to enter the United States and study at the College.
U.S. officials deported Ismail B. Ajjawi, a 17-year-old Palestinian resident of Tyre, Lebanon, Friday night shortly after he arrived at Boston Logan International Airport. According to Ajjawi, before canceling Ajjawi’s visa, immigration officers interrogated him for hours — at one point leaving to search his phone and computer.
Harvard officials are working to resolve the matter before classes begin on September.
