Maria Isabel Bueso and the End of Medical Deferred Action
As Kevin has already noted, the United States is cracking down on medical deferred action–exercising discretion not to deport individuals on the basis of medical conditions.
One individual caught in the end (or good-as-end) of that program is Maria Isabel Bueso. Bueso came to the United States 16 years ago, at the invitation of Bay Area doctors, to participate in a clinical trial for a drug to treat a rare medical condition: mucopolysaccharidosis type VI. She now faces deportation to Guatemala where, without treatment, she faces certain death.
