Second Anniversary of DACA rescission

September 5 marks the second anniversary since the Trump administration rescinded DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. In tribute, several media outlets feature moving testimony from DACA recipients, including this local essay from a South Korean DACA recipient and scientist in Virginia and many more. I want to highlight the Time Magazine from 2012, revisited in 2017 on the fifth anniversary of the program, that I use to open my seminar on Citizenship seminar every year as an evocative way of asking what it means to be an American.

Several legal challenges to the rescission led to federal court injunctions, ordering continued acceptance of DACA renewal applications. The Supreme Court will hear the consolidated case on whether the DACA rescission can stand on November 12. UPDATE: On September 6, President Trump announced he is open to DACA legislation if he prevails iin the Supreme Court; this would preserve legal protection for DACA recipients, though it would require bipartisan legislation that has proved difficult to get passed amid the partisan climate of broader immigration reform policies.
