Latino lawmakers thank ex-Gov. Pete Wilson for accidentally sparking pro-immigrant movement

The Sacramento Bee reports that “Latino lawmakers in the [California] Legislature released a video thanking former Republican Governor Pete Wilson for campaigning against immigration 25 years ago [in supporting Proposition 187] and accidentally sparking a pro-immigrant movement.” The landslide passage of the initiative in November 1994 led to an increase in Latinx activism, increased naturalization, and a political transformation of the state.  California in 1994 passed a milestone immigration enforcement law; today, California is a self-declared “sanctuary state.”
