Kidnapped Migrants Denied the Ability to Claim Asylum, Trapped in Mexico

The Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy under which asylum seekers wait in Mexico while their asylum claims are being decided, remain in the news.  And not in a good way.

The New York Times published a story by Miriam Jordan reporting that a family kidnapped after the U.S. Border Patrol denied their legal ability to claim asylum at the Southern Border because of Migrant Protection Protocols, also known as Return to Mexico. This article included audio of the ransom negotiations between the kidnappers and the mother, who was living in the United States. This piece offers another indication of the human consequences of MPP.

After the father was released on ransom, following his torture in front of his son, the Unites States again said he must remain in Mexico because he didn’t have a credible asylum claim.

Miriam Jordan and Mitchell Ferman also report on a Cuban doctor waiting for asylum in the United States who has become the only full-time physician at a makeshift encampment for 2,500 migrants in Mexico.
