India’s Supreme Court to Hear Challenges to Nation’s Citizenship Amendment Act
Less than a week ago, India passed a new law: the Citizenship Amendment Act. As the BBC explains, the law creates a path to citizenship for undocumented migrants. Sounds good, right? Well, there’s a hitch. The only folks eligible are non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
The law has outraged India’s Muslim community. Protests have been widespread.
Now the nation’s supreme court is set to weigh in. The court will consider a variety of challenges to the law next month. But the law itself has not be stayed.
