Mike Bloomberg on Immigration
Former Big Apple Mayor Michael (Mike) Bloomberg is a late addition to the pack of candidates vying for the Democratic presidential nomination. His stated positions on immigration are generally in line with what has emerged as the conventional position of the Democratic candidates.
Alexandra Kelley on The Hill reports on Bloomberg’s latest statements about his immigration policy. He cites a need for a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, but also advocates a stronger border patrol, perhaps beginning in airports. Bloomberg also supports increasing foreign aid to build the countries migrants are fleeing.
Speaking with The San Diego Union Tribune, Bloomberg supports creating a pathway to citizenship to the approximate 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. He also New York City as an example of immigrants feeling safe and “comfortable, regardless of their immigration status, to come and get city services.”
Bloomberg emphasizes that, although he supports immigration, the United States needs to maintain control of its borders. He sees the benefits of highly skilled immigrants bringing their talents to the U.S. in a diverse group of industries, such as computer programming and music performance.
