At the Movies in the Time of Coronavirus: Top Gun (1986)
In this time of stay at home orders, it is a good time to catch up on “old” movies. I am trying to pick more upbeat movies, and here is a “come back” story for you.
Top Gun, with Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, is one of my favorites. The IMDB plot description:
“Code-named `Maverick’, Pete Mitchell, the impetuous daredevil Navy-pilot ace, is accepted into Miramar’s elite Fighter School, also known as `Top Gun’. There, as the impulsive pilot competes with the best of the best, not only will he meet Charlie, the flying school’s curvaceous astrophysics instructor, but also the brilliant and highly competitive fellow student, `Iceman’, with whom right from the start, he will engage in a reckless contest. As Maverick is haunted by his father’s mysterious death, will he be able to suppress his wild nature to win the prestigious Top Gun Trophy?”
The cast includes:
- Tom Cruise as LT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell
- Kelly McGillis as Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood. The character is based on a real-life person, Christine Fox, who worked at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.[6]
- Val Kilmer as LT Tom “Iceman” Kazansky
- Anthony Edwards as LTJG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw
- Tom Skerritt as CDR Mike “Viper” Metcalf
- Michael Ironside as LCDR Rick “Jester” Heatherl
The sequel (Top Gun: Maverick) is slated for release this summer:
Here is some Top Gun trivia for you. Some of the memorable bar scenes were filmed at Kansas City Barbecue in San Diego. It is still open and worth a visit.
