President Trump says he’ll sign order with ‘road to citizenship’ for DACA recipients

After the Supreme Court’s deferred action and other immigration decisions this Term, the future of immigration is in the hands of the political branches of the U.S. government.  And we are very likely to see action by the Trump administration on one prominent Obama administration policy.

Rafael Bernal on The Hill reports that President Trump said yesterday that he intends to sign an executive order in the next month that will include a “road to citizenship” for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

In an interview with Telemundo anchor José Díaz-Balart, Trump blamed Democrats from walking away from a deal on DACA and proclaimed that the Supreme Court’s decision blocking DACA’s rescission gave him “tremendous power.”

After the Trump interview, according to NPR, “White House spokesman Judd Deere provided the following statement:

`As the president announced today, he is working on an executive order to establish a merit-based immigration system to further protect U.S. workers. Furthermore, the president has long said he is willing to work with Congress on a negotiated legislative solution to DACA, one that could include citizenship, along with strong border security and permanent merit-based reforms. This does not include amnesty.'”

Stay tuned!
