On Immigration, Will Biden Become the New “Deporter in Chief”?
As we have previously blogged, immigrant right activists will not take anything for granted with a Democrat in the White House. Newsweek and NPR have stories on how immigrant activists are pushing President-elect Joe Biden on immigration. One fear is that a Biden administration will return to the aggressive Obama immigration enforcement policies pursue in his first term. Franco Ordonez explains:
“The divide between the incoming administration and activists dates back to the Obama administration, when immigration rights advocates were not happy with how then-President Barack Obama handled enforcement issues — a period when Obama had been dubbed the `deporter in chief’ for his record on deportations.
It wasn’t until his second term that Obama shifted his focus and began prioritizing the removal of those with serious criminal records or who posed national security threats.
