The Sidewalk School for Asylum Seekers
The Sidewalk School for Asylum Seekers is a U.S. nonprofit that aims to “provide quality education to those who would go without as they experience displacement in the Matamoros Tent City.” That is, the school aims to educate children who are seeking asylum in the United States but who are forced to pursue their claims from Mexico because of the Migrant Protection Protocols.
As the AP reports, the teachers at this school are all asylum seekers, stuck in Mexico as well. Because of covid, the school no longer meets in person. The teachers and children communicate through tablets provided by the nonprofit.
The classes, the AP describes, “have offered children not only the chance to catch up on studies that were interrupted when their families fled violence in their homelands, but also a distraction from the long days of boredom.”
