AP reports that DHS will not be renewing immigration detention contracts with a detention center in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, nor with the Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia. The Irwin Center was the locus of allegations regarding unwarranted hysterectomies that became public in September 2020. The North Dartmouth facility was one highlighted in a report documenting some 800 complaints of hate-related abuse in immigration detention.
In announcing the decision to not continue housing immigrant detainees at these facilities, Mayorkas stated: “We will not tolerate the mistreatment of individuals in civil immigration detention or substandard conditions of detention.”
