AP Report: U.S. government has groups to pick asylum-seekers to allow into the United States
The Biden administration is overhauling the Trump administration’s overhauling of the asylum system. Earlier this week, the Biden administration announced the end of the Migrant Protection Protocols, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims were being processed.
Elliot Spagat & Julie Watson for the Associated Press report on another change to asylum processing, which is innovative and differs dramatically from President Trump’s approach:
“The Biden administration has quietly tasked six humanitarian groups with recommending which migrants should be allowed to stay in the U.S. instead of being rapidly expelled from the country under federal pandemic-related powers that block people from seeking asylum.
The groups will determine who is most vulnerable in Mexico, and their criteria has not been made public. It comes as . . . the government faces intensifying pressure to lift the public health powers instituted by former President Donald Trump . . . .”
According to the story, the groups assisting in making recommendations on which migrants should be allowed to stay in the United States are:
1. International Rescue Committee
3. HIAS
6. Institute for Women in Migration
