The Deets on Britain’s New Asylum Bill

Flag

A new “Nationality and Borders Bill” was introduced to parliament this week. It’s a solid 81 pages long. And while you might be up for the slog, I’ve got a shortcut for you.

Maya Goodfellow is a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield, England, has an op-ed in the Washington Post breaking down some of the key points: “discriminating against people who are forced to enter Britain ‘illegally’; criminalizing those who help people seeking asylum enter the country; and opening the door to offshore asylum centers.” This is in addition to formalizing the nation’s “shortened asylum screening interview” process.

While I joke about the bill being a slog, comparative immprofs might find it really intriguing. Among the items that Goodfellow doesn’t cover in her op-ed is item 23, wherein the “late provision of evidence in asylum or human rights claim” should be given “minimal weight” by the adjudicator absent “good reasons why the evidence was provided late.”
