53 Migrants Die, More Injured in Accident in Mexico

Manuel De La Cruz and Edgar H. Clemente for the Associated Press offer grisly details of an accident of a truck filled with migrants in southern Mexico.  According to the report, “a freight truck jammed with as many as 200 migrants tipped over and crashed into the base of a steel pedestrian bridge . . . .”  53 people died and 54 injured.  .”Volunteer rescuers hauled bodies off the pile by their arms and legs, while some migrants scrambled and limped to extract themselves from the twisted steel sheets of the collapsed container.”

The Mexican government has taken steps, with U.S. support, to reduce the flow of migrants from Central America.  However, human trafficking continues with “freight trucks operated by smugglers who charge thousands of dollars to take [migrants] to the U.S. border.”
