Foreign students fleeing Ukraine say they face segregation, racism at border

Race is featuring prominently in the emerging refugee crisis in Ukraine.  Yesterday, there were many reports that the global welcome of Ukrainian refugees — as well as the news reporting on the refugees — differs dramatically from the global response to Syrian refugees a few years ago.

Today, there are reports of discrimination against foreign students from India and Africa seeking to flee Ukraine.  CNN, for example, reports that, as the Russian invasion continues, foreign students attempting to leave the country claim that they have experienced racist treatment by Ukrainian security forces and border officials.  One African medical student told CNN that she and other foreigners were ordered off the public transit bus at a checkpoint between Ukraine and Poland border.

They were told to stand aside as the bus drove off with only Ukrainian nationals on board, she says.  Rachel Onyegbule, a Nigerian medical student was stranded at the border town.

African nations on the UN Security Council yesterday condemned discrimination against African citizens at the Ukrainian border.

“We strongly condemn this racism and believe that it is damaging to the spirit of solidarity that is so urgently needed today. The mistreatment of African peoples on Europe’s borders needs to cease immediately, whether to the Africans fleeing Ukraine or to those crossing the Mediterranean,” Kenyan Ambassador to the UN Martin Kimani said yesterday.

On February 28, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that more than half a million have already fled Ukraine.
