Food Justice DMV

Today I learned about a pretty amazing nonprofit in the DC/MD/VA area: Food Justice DMV. It is a “volunteer colectiva delivering food & standing in solidarity with thousands of immigrant neighbors. We deliver justicia in a grocery bag.”

Food Justice DMV serves its community members in myriad ways:

  • 3 weekly food distributions (one each in VA, MD, DC)
  • Offering “resource coaches” to “speak to families who have needs for support that are mysteries they have not been able to solve … everything from vaccinations, rent supports, food ‘grab and go’s’ to electric bills, health insurance and more.”
  • Text broadcasts
  • Locating other needed items for immigrant families including clothes and furniture.

I learned about this colectiva from a recent WaPo article about a homeless immigrant family in the DC area. The article is an interesting, but tough, read. It follows a family that fled to the US from El Salvador after the dad was shot 6 times by gang members for refusing to cooperate. They are seeking asylum and, for now, are living out of a Honda minivan.
