Russian Oligarchs Seeking Citizenship in Portugal Under Scrutiny

Tereixa Constenla of El Pais reports that “[t]he list of Portuguese billionaires keeps growing.” According to the article, Russian oligarchs under sanctions are now seeking citizenship “by taking advantage of legislation designed for descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled in the 15th century from the Iberian Peninsula.”

More recently, Reuters reports that the country is scrutinizing citizenship applications of additional applications from Russian oligarchs seeking citizenship under the legislation. The application process, which requires submitting ancestry information to show qualifying status, is being reviewed under suspicion of corruption and document falsification.
