El Paso is dealing with increase in migrants crossing the border

NPR’s A Martinez spoke with Tommy Gonzalez, the city manager of El Paso, Texas, where the mayor recently declared a state of emergency over an influx of migrants from the U.S.-Mexico border. Without using the hyperbole of the news reports about the “crisis” (and here), Gonzalez was professional and thoughtful in outlining the challenges facing the city with an increase in migrants and limited city resources. My sense is that he was a committed city manager doing his best to do his job. I was most impressed with his sensitive and fact-based approach to a legitimate policy issue that needs effective leadership, not sound bites and finger pointing.
