Biden Administration’s Proposed Asylum Rule Roundly Attacked by Immigrant and Refugee Rights Groups, Democrats
The Biden administration’s latest limit on asylum eligibility is continuing to have ripple effects.
As some claim that President Biden’s immigration policies are starting to look like Donald Trump’s, two White House immigration policy aides are reportedly leaving the White House.
In addition, NBC News reports that “[m]ore than 100 immigration advocacy organizations have launched a public campaign to raise awareness and voice their concern to the Biden administration over its new [asylum] proposal . . . .”
“`This rule is a stark reversal of the administration’s stated commitment to restoring access to asylum. The right to see asylum, no matter how you enter the U.S., has been a hallmark of U.S. asylum law and that right shouldn’t be conditioned on whether you sought and were denied asylum on your way here,’ said Alex Miller, director of the Immigration Justice Campaign.
Other immigration groups, including the National Immigration Justice Center, have said they are prepared to sue the administration to stop the new policy from moving forward.”
I strongly oppose @POTUS Biden’s proposed rule that would illegally ban refugees from seeking asylum in the U.S. https://t.co/Ogfh4e6kyJ

We’re ready to defend the legal and human right to asylum, as NIJC Director of Litigation Keren Zwick notes. Check out @Salon @commondreams @johnsonjakep #NoAsylumBan https://t.co/WOkND6AoEQ

Seeking asylum is a human right.
This rule will return asylum-seekers to danger and further undermine regional refugee protection efforts. It’s counterproductive to building a safe, orderly, and humane asylum system. https://t.co/B4D5QaUytE

1/ Last month, when the Biden Admin announced it would be issuing a proposed rule, which would function as a ‘transit ban’ on asylum seekers who don’t first apply for asylum in a transit country, @SenBooker, @SenatorLujan, @SenAlexPadilla & I urged the Admin to abandon this idea.
