U.K. Taking Its Own Hard Line On Undocumented Migration
We’ve had some disappointing news on the U.S. immigration front of late–the return of transit bans (nice to see Biden engaging in some real bipartisanship by embracing Trump ideas) and the potential return of family detention (ah, Biden, I see you’re taking up that awesome Obama mantle that Trump dropped, albeit in favor of family separation).
So, it’s somewhat refreshing to see the U.K. making an absolute mess of immigration as well. Check out this tweet from the U.K. prime minister:
If you come to the UK illegally:
➡️ You can’t claim asylum
➡️ You can’t benefit from our modern slavery protections
➡️ You can’t make spurious human rights claims
➡️ You can’t stay pic.twitter.com/026oSvKoJZ

To be clear, this is the announcement of a PLAN not an actual summary of current U.K. law. The tweet and photo are misleading on that front.
But what a collection of statements! It’s one thing to say “you can’t make spurious human rights claims.” I think everyone gets that. No fraud. Gotcha. Even “you can’t stay” makes sense if framed with the lens of “unless you can.” But “You can’t benefit from our modern slavery protections.” What in the actual hell?
At least Biden didn’t say it. Then again, he seems to be collecting ideas….
