Suzanne Monyak for Roll Call reports that House Republicans released sweeping immigration legislation yesterday that would tighten asylum eligibility, expand migrant family detention and crack down on the employment of undocumented workers.
Here us the 137-page proposed bill. It represents a response to migration on the U.S.-Mexico border by House Republicans, who have made border security a focal point.
The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to mark up the bill Wednesday.
The legislation likely will face hurdles to passage, given disagreement among House Republicans over border security. It also will not gain much traction in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
UPDATE Apr. 18, 3;0 P.M. PST):

-
Increasing resources at the border to process asylum seekers and expediting removal proceedings for those without legal claims to stay in the U.S.;
-
Expanding humanitarian assistance and developing financing to better integrate migrants and refugees in countries across the Americas; and
-
Elevating efforts to counter transnational criminal organizations involved in human trafficking and smuggling.
