Immigration Article of the Day: Claire R. Thomas, The So-Called Stateless: Firm Resettlement, African Immigrants, and Human Rights Violations in Mexico

Claire R. Thomas, The So-Called Stateless: Firm Resettlement, African Immigrants, and Human Rights Violations in Mexico. Boston University’s Public Interest Law Journal
This paper, which Thomas researched and wrote during a Fulbright year in Mexico, explores the arbitrary immigration status given to migrants in Mexico, including transit visas, humanitarian visas, refugee status, and labels of “stateless”, all without interpretation, consent, or understanding for the person impacted. It also offers an explanation of Mexican humanitarian immigration law, and how the implementation of these laws changes on a routine basis in response to U.S. pressures. Importantly, it addresses racism and xenophobia in Mexico, and how their intersection in all levels of Mexican bureaucracy, as well as civil society, particularly impacts Black migrants.
