Senate in Italy Clears the Way for Expansion of Migrant Detention
Gaia Pianigiani of the New York Times reports today on the passage of new immigration laws by the Senate in Italy that would build more detention centers to detain persons seeking asylum. In Italy, the Times reports, processing asylum applications can now take as long as two years. The new set of laws, if ultimately adopted, would also create a new crime for smuggling that results in death, with a punishment of up to thirty years in prison.
