In Philly or Philly Adjacent? Check out this art exhibit re: Berks Detention Facility

Calling all immprofs in Philadelphia and those reasonably adjacent… get yourselves over to the Vox Populi art gallery. You can find it at 319 North 11th Street on the Third Floor. It’s open Friday-Sunday from 12-6PM.

The gallery is currently displaying an exhibit entitled Queremos Justicia: How We Shut Down Berks. Berks County Residential Center was an immigration detention facility housing families in Leesport, Pennsylvania. It closed in January 2023 after years of advocacy.

The Queremos Jusitica exhibit explores “how the coalition won this victory through the art made for the campaign and how it played an invaluable role in education, mobilization, and community building. Learn about the artists who supported the campaign with their talent and most importantly, view the art and messages of those most directly impacted, the families held at the Berks County Detention Center themselves.”

The exhibit has been curated by coalition organizer Jasmine Rivera. As PBS reports, “Rivera… proactively sought out professional artists to join the campaign’s working group to design imagery that could be used in direct-action protests, on t-shirts and buttons, and in online posts.”

I WANT TO GO TO PHILLY. Alas, that’s pretty darn far away from Oklahoma. All you PA, DC, NY, NJ immprofs, go have fun for me.
