Remembering Our Deported Veterans on Memorial Day

Since the passage of the 1996 immigration laws, thousands of U.S. veterans have been deported from the United States despite serving our country honorably in military service.

A PBS documentary released in 2021 features some of the stories of military veterans deported after their military service.

The Biden administration has allowed some deported veterans to return, like Laura Meza, who had this to say to CBS News when she returned home to the US last month: “I’m still walking on clouds. This is like a dream. This is a dream. I’ve been praying for this for 16 years.”

To learn more about the banishment of veterans and what needs to be done, see this report by the ACLU of California.
