NPR reports on a United Nations investigator’s visit to the detention center at the U.S. naval station  in Guantánamo Bay.  The investigator concluded that continue to face “cruel, inhuman and degrading” treatment and that  the site should be closed.

The first official U.N. investigator to visit Guantánamo Bay, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, found “near-constant surveillance, forced cell extractions, [and] undue use of restraints” at the facility, where 30 men remain detained.

Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, spoke yesterday about her report on the treatment of current and former detainees. She said she also met with victims of the September 11 terror attacks.  It reportedly was the first official visit of a U.N. expert to Guantánamo.
