Their Pot Convictions Were Erased, but They Still Face Deportation by Jill Applegate

Jill Applegate, an immigration attorney and Skadden Fellow at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, has published an excellent Opinion piece in the New York Times.

The piece highlights how immigrants have been left behind in the push to decriminalize marijuana. Although New York has taken steps to address the racial disparities caused by marijuana criminalization, Ms. Applegate’s clients still face deportation based on such convictions.

The essay also highlights that funding for pro bono legal assistance does not yet direct resources towards those “living in legal limbo in the United States” or who have already been deported based on such convictions.
