Representative Castro and Other House Democrats Call on Action to Stop Separation of Families by Texas
Texas has been among the leaders among the states in taking immigration enforcement measures and denouncing the Biden administration’s policies.
Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) has been a staunch advocate for humane border enforcement. Here is information from his office:
“[The letter below] was sent [yesterday] by Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), all Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) members from Texas, the entire CHC Executive Board, and other CHC members to the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security in relation to Operation Lone Star in Texas. A formal press release will come from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus tomorrow.
In the letter, members call for an immediate investigation and administration action to stop the Texas Department of Public Safety from intentionally separating migrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The letter further calls for:
- Expedited action to reunite separated families and ensure that the families’ immigration cases proceed together.
- Expedited investigation of alleged due process violations and, if due process rights are being violated, immediate action to protect the rights of those in custody, identify those whose rights were violated and reunite them with their families.
- Action to ensure that separated fathers are not being placed into expedited removal and efforts to immediately reunite fathers with their families.
- Expedited investigation into how federal dollars are being used by the State of Texas in ways that violate civil rights and anti-discrimination laws and pursuit of all avenues, including the courts, to stop Governor Abbott from continuing to implement these policies and prevent any further human rights abuses.
Today’s letter follows a Congressional Delegation Congressman Castro led to Eagle Pass, Texas on August 8, 2023 to help legislators see the deadly razor wire and buoys that Governor Abbott installed in the Rio Grande and engage with local authorities and community members about the impact of Operation Lone Star on asylum-seekers and federal immigration enforcement. The delegation on August 8 included Congressman Tony Cárdenas of California, Congresswomen Sylvia Garcia and Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, and Senator Roland Gutierrez, who represents Eagle Pass.”
