Weike Wang reads her story “Status in Flux,” which appeared in the June 26, 2023, issue of the magazine. Wang is the author of two novels: “Chemistry,” which won the pen/Hemingway Award in 2018, and “Joan Is Okay,” which was published in 2022.
Hat tip Lenni Benson who reminded immigration law professors on the listserve that the story “relates in the voice of the first-person narrator the `limbo’ status of a person moving from an H-1B to adjustment of status. . . . Concepts expressed if not explained in the story: adjustment of status, advance parole, `alien registration,’ place of birth as opposed to place of nationality, medical checks and contagious diseases, proof of work histories, `steal status’ through marriage, or `jump the line,’ and the confusion of dual or multiple citizenship.”
