This comes out of the blue (at least to me). CBS News reports that President Biden will host the Americas Summit on November 3 in Washington. The president has invited the leaders of Barbados, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Uruguay to attend. The countries are members of the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity, launched last year at the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles to address economic development, inequality, and the fate of hemisphere’s democracies.
The White House statement on the American Summitt reads in full as follows:
“President Joseph R. Biden, Jr will host leaders from the Western Hemisphere at the White House on November 3, 2023 during the inaugural Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity Leaders’ Summit. During the Summit, President Biden will reaffirm the United States’ commitment to work together with our partners to deepen economic integration in our hemisphere, drive more inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and tackle the underlying economic drivers of irregular migration in our hemisphere. During the Summit, President Biden will also outline a number of commitments to strengthen and expand our efforts to drive regional economic growth by creating new tools to mobilize responsible investment and focusing on the drivers of bottom-up and middle-out economic growth, good-quality jobs, and our competitiveness.” (bold added).
