Disabled Immigrants Face Compounding Barriers to Education and Employment
The Urban Institute notes that there has been limited research exploring how the barriers immigrants with disabilities face to employment and education can lead to inequitable outcomes.During a recent convening, Urban and a group of experts discussed issues affecting financial well-being of immigrants with disabilities. The conversation, held in English and Spanish, focused on education and employment. During the meeting, participants discussed issues such as:
- How immigrants with disabilities face multiple structural barriers due to their disability status, nativity and immigration status, race, ethnicity, language, and other factors that affect their education and employment outcomes.
- How educational institutions and vocational rehabilitation services for people with disabilities often lack the cultural and linguistic competencies needed to effectively support disabled immigrants and their families.
- How Protection and Advocacy systems and community-based organizations could help bridge current gaps in access to education and employment opportunities.
