House GOP unveils Mayorkas impeachment articles

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary

The Washington Post reports that House Republicans announced two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the weekend accusing him of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and breach of the public trust.  The impeachment articles had been rumored for weeks.

According to the Post, “[t]he charges come as Republicans swiftly concluded two public impeachment hearings this month without Mayorkas’s in-person testimony or testimony from any fact witnesses. Although the Biden administration has been struggling with the overwhelming surge of migrants at the southern border, congressional lawmakers have yet to detail clear evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors on the part of leaders.”

Here are the articles of impeachment.

NPR reported as follows on the Mayorkas impeachment:

NPR’s Deirdre Walsh tells Morning Edition that even if the articles pass along party lines in the committee and full House, the Senate is not likely to convict and remove Mayorkas.
Meanwhile, a bipartisan deal to address the border crisis may come together in the Senate this week — despite former President Donald Trump’s lobbying against it. Walsh notes that any effort to scuttle this deal means there won’t be any aid to Ukraine, since the two are linked.
