Three migrants drown in Rio Grande after Texas blocks Border Patrol from rescue

Immigration law scholars often emphasize the human consequences of immigration law and enforcement. Recent deaths of three migrants drive that point home.
Last week, I blogged about the Texas National Guard blocking the U.S. government from access to the border. Texas Public Radio has reported that a migrant mother and two children drowned in the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass as they were attempting to cross the U.S. southern border. Under the direction of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas National Guard seized control of Eagle Pass’ Shelby Park, which faces the Rio Grande and has denied access to the Border Patrol. The Border Patrol said that they were unable to provide emergency assistance to the migrants.
