The ITIN Reform and Tax Fairness Act

Congress is considering the ITIN Reform and Tax Fairness Act,” a bill that would roll back the 2017 Trump Tax Bill’s provisions that disadvantage immigrants and remove barriers to immigrant taxpayers who file their taxes with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs).

The National Immigration Law Center (NILC) and partners Unidos U S and the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) have been working with Senator Catherine Cortez Masto toss this bill.  Organizations can to use this form to sign on to endorse the bill by July 19.

“The ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) Reform and Tax Fairness Act seeks to remove obstacles and simplify the ITIN process and restore eligibility for the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to immigrant children who file with an ITIN (reverting to policy before the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act).  ITIN filers pay taxes, and therefore the process of obtaining an ITIN should be simplified. And the nearly 1 million children who have been denied the CTC should be able to once again access this important poverty-fighting tool.”
