Trump campaign distancing itself from comedian’s comment at divisive Madison Square Garden rally
CBS News reports that, at a former President Donald Trump a rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden yesterday, the audience heard offensive remarks from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who called Puerto Rico an “island of garbage.” The Trump campaign is working to distance itself from that comment.
The comments have sparked outrage. Billboard reports that entertainers Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin were among the prominent artists who endorse Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign after the racist joke about Puerto Rico. “All three boosted a video from the Democratic candidate pledging to do her best for the citizens of the island nation following what CNN described as a Trump rally brimming with ‘blistering anti-migrant rhetoric [that] ranks alongside the most flagrant demagoguery by a major figure in any Western nation since World War II.'”
The Puerto Rican slur will unlikely help the Trump/Vance ticket to attract Puerto Rican voters in the critical swing state of Pennsylvania.
