El Hierro Island on the Frontline of EU Migration

Reuters reports on El Hierro island, part of the Canary Islands in Spain, as the leading destination on the Atlantic migration route.

The Canary Islands is a leading point of arrival, and this year El Hierro has “received half of all irregular migrant arrivals in the Canaries.” Overall, there are currently more than 5,600 unaccompanied minors in the Canary Islands and the Islands received nearly 40,000 arrivals total so far this year.

Still, Italy remains the top arrival destination in the EU for irregular migrants.
